When to See a Physio vs a Chiro

A guide to choosing the right practitioner for your condition.

Choosing between physiotherapy and chiropractic

One of the most common questions we hear at Meridian Health is: “Should I see a physio or a chiro?” It is a fair question, and the answer depends on your condition, your goals, and sometimes your personal preference.

What Physiotherapists Do

Physiotherapists assess, diagnose, and treat a wide range of musculoskeletal, neurological, and cardiorespiratory conditions. Their toolbox includes:

  • Manual therapy: Joint mobilisation, soft tissue massage, and stretching
  • Exercise prescription: Structured rehabilitation programs tailored to your condition
  • Education: Pain management strategies, ergonomic advice, and self-management techniques
  • Modalities: Dry needling, taping, and electrotherapy where appropriate

Physiotherapy tends to be particularly well-suited for:

  • Post-surgical rehabilitation
  • Sports injuries requiring structured return-to-play programs
  • Chronic conditions needing long-term exercise management
  • Workplace injuries and workers compensation cases

What Chiropractors Do

Chiropractors specialise in the diagnosis and treatment of conditions related to the spine and nervous system. Their primary tool is the spinal adjustment — a precise, controlled force applied to specific joints. They also use:

  • Soft tissue techniques: Trigger point therapy and myofascial release
  • Postural assessment: Identifying and correcting alignment issues
  • Lifestyle advice: Ergonomics, sleeping positions, and movement habits

Chiropractic care tends to be particularly well-suited for:

  • Acute neck and back pain
  • Headaches and migraines with a spinal component
  • Postural imbalances and chronic stiffness
  • Joint restrictions that benefit from manual adjustment

When It Does Not Matter

For many common conditions — general back pain, neck stiffness, shoulder tension — both professions can deliver excellent results. The practitioner’s skill, experience, and ability to communicate with you matters more than the title on their door.

Our Recommendation

If you are unsure, start with a conversation. At Meridian Health, our reception team can help guide you to the right practitioner based on your symptoms and history. And because our physios and chiros work under the same roof, we can easily refer internally if your condition would benefit from a different approach.

The best practitioner for you is the one who listens, explains clearly, and gets results. Everything else is secondary.
